You can learn a lot about the world by considering the history of one distinct slice of it. The talk that will stage at Denver’s Woodie Fisher Kitchen & Bar on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at 6 p.m., takes on origins and evolution of a whole pie, pizza, and is sure to leave audience members savoring the fascinating field of culinary history.

Photo: Pizza Hut

Carol Helstosky, the University of Denver historian and food scholar who will be giving the talk, wrote the book Pizza: A Global History and has devoted a substantial portion of her career to studying modern Italy and the cuisine of that region.

The ingredients for her talk will include history, geography, culinary science, and some interesting business lessons offered by the stories of globally successful pizza chains.

Those whose fondest memories of college include ordering pizza delivery to their dorms probably will end up wishing they’d had Professor Helstosky for a class. With several pizzas on Woodie Fisher’s menu, any cravings arising from the talk should be fairly easy to satisfy.

Advance tickets: $13.50 (plus processing fees). You can .

Tickets at the door are $17, or $15 with student ID. (Note: Admission does not include pizza or drinks.)

Pizza in roughly the form we know it today started as an inexpensive and filling meal for sailors and dock workers in eighteenth-century Naples, Italy.

Visitors to the city regarded the pizza they encountered there as disgusting, but slowly and steadily pizza rose to become one of the world’s most popular foods, with chefs and consumers alike putting original spins on it.

Helstosky will start by looking at pizza’s “origin myths,” debunking many of them.

From there, she will take you on a culinary journey through space and time from old Italy to the United States and then on to far corners of the globe.

Explore pizza’s incredible success in a variety of geographic contexts, and learn about those individuals and communities who sometimes intentionally and sometimes unwittingly contributed to pizza’s popularity. You’ll get to know figures like Queen Margherita, for whom Pizza Margherita was named.

We’ll look at how and why pizza surged in popularity in the United States after World War II, and we’ll examine the origin stories of major U.S. pizza chains and the roles those chains played in spreading pizza around the world.

For pizza and history lovers, it will be a talk with everything.

How about discover the science of intelligence with Amherst’s top professor of psychology? Now you can whenever the mood strikes through .

You may have heard of One Day University, or even attended one of its events. Pre-pandemic, the organization hosted wildly popular seminars in 61 cities around the country — including Denver!

Like other institutions of higher learning, One Day U has decided to go virtual so that everyone can “attend” fascinating lectures by professors from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Cornell, and dozens of other schools.

Here’s how it works. Every weekday at 2 p.m. MST, One Day U live streams a brand new one hour talk featuring one of more than 200 engaging professors. They are open to all members — no advance registration required. Anyone with a computer or tablet can participate.

Here’s a video snippet of a talk by Professor Catherine Anderson of Amherst College on Understanding Intelligence.

During a live talk, attendees can enter questions at any point in a “Chatroll” box on their screen. Then, the professor goes through and addresses all questions in the last 15 minutes of the talk.

One Day U sends out an email to members every Sunday called the “Weekend Scholar” with a schedule of the week’s upcoming talks and direct links to view, so members can add the week’s talks to their calendar.

Just visit the website and click “upcoming talks,” or click on a talk in the “Weekend Scholar” email when it is time to stream.

One Day University has a reputation for unique, interesting, eclectic topics, with a diverse lineup of talks: The Science of Happiness; The Worst Supreme Court Decisions; Women in Comedy; Beethoven and the Beatles; and Why Art Matters will all stream live this spring.

Missed a live talk? No worries! Membership also includes access to a searchable video library of past 500+ talks on topics including history, art, politics, psychology, literature, film, science, and much more.

Among the most popular:

  • Hamilton vs. Jefferson: The Rivalry that Shaped America | Louis Masur, Rutgers University
  • What We Know About the Brain | Jessica Payne, University of Notre Dame
  • The Musical Genius of Frank Sinatra | Anna Celenza, Georgetown University
  • The Presidential Library: Books that shaped Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR and More | Joseph Luzzi, Bard College
  • Four Paintings Every Art Lover Should See | Tina Rivers Ryan, Albright-Knox Art Gallery (formerly Columbia University)
  • Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness | Catherine Sanderson, Amherst College
  • Four Films that Changed America | Marc Lapadula, Yale University

Members can access all of these plus hundreds more in .

One Day University is perfect for lifelong learners of all ages. You don’t need a college degree, just a curious mind who likes to dig in to a variety of topics and issues.

While the One Day U professors hail from prestigious universities, they are also experts in making their subject matter accessible to learners of any level.

Talks are just 50-minutes, with no homework or tests (woo-hoo!), and designed to be enjoyed without a background knowledge in the subject matter.

If you did attend One Day University in Denver, you may have paid $100 or more. Now you can “enroll” for just $8.95 per month or $89 if you pay for the entire year in advance. It doesn’t take a math whiz to know that calculates to about 30¢ per day.

Not only can you participate in new live streamed lectures five days a week, but you get unlimited access to the video library.

Right now, One Day University is offering a two-week free trial to anyone who signs up for a membership, but you can . After that, it’s just $8.95/month of $89/year. It’s a lot cheaper than college tuition — and maybe you’ll learn more, too!

When you purchase a gift membership, you enter the name and email address of the recipient, and the date and time you would like the gift to be sent. You can also enter a customized message.

Between school closures, social distancing and spring break, many kids are stuck at home. Face it, there’s only so many times you can watch Frozen or Nick Jr. shows. To keep their busy brains from getting rusty, try these FREE and fun educational websites to help they stay occupied and learn from home.

Peanuts Worldwide is offering free educational materials that give students from Kindergarten through eighth grade the chance to develop their STEM, language arts, and social studies skills with the help of Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the whole Peanuts Gang.

All the materials were developed by the award-winning curriculum specialists at Young Minds Inspired (YMI), the nation’s leading provider of free educational outreach programs. Besides the lesson plans, Peanuts also offers free out-of-this-world coloring pages featuring Astronaut Snoopy and his crew.

The new, free online resource which features activities and content from the company’s iconic portfolio of brands including American Girl, Barbie, Fisher-Price, Hot Wheels, Thomas & Friends and more, along with play-from-home information and tips, for parents and caregivers to encourage kids to keep playing.

The site gives parents and caregivers easy access to content from Mattel brands including printable coloring pages, puzzles and activities, free and ready-to-play games featuring Barbie, Hot Wheels, Thomas & Friends and others, crafting and DIY projects, animated, stop-motion and live-action videos and downloadable apps.

Do you know how to get to Sesame Street? I do. Younger kids will love all the activities they can do online through from home. From playing games to learning letters and colors. They can watch literally hundreds of the shows video clips that will keep them busy for hours.

If you sign up for a FREE Sesame Street account you can get access to more games, videos, start favoriting content and more.

I’m a huge fan of PBS, but had no clue there was a section designed just for kids. Each of the educational shows your children watch on PBS has its own learning section through .

The site has a ton of activities such as counting games, sing-alongs and more. includes nearly 200 educational games, which can be downloaded for offline play anytime, anywhere. You can also sign up for a FREE newsletter with daily tips and activities you can use to help kids learn and play at home.

The Moth’s Education Program is publishing a . Each Tuesday, the website will bring you a story from The Moth’s archive paired with fun and educational activities including how to write or tell your own story, journal prompts, word searches and reflection questions. These activities are designed for you and your child or young adult to enjoy the power of storytelling.  .

I used to write for National Geographic Kids magazine so was thrilled to see their new online presence. combines the enriching educational resources of the National Geographic Society with the fun and informational offerings of National Geographic Kids to create an online hub to help future explorers fill their time and their minds.

From boredom busters and games, to videos and live daily talks with National Geographic Explorers, NatGeo@Home aims to help inspire young people and support caregivers by offering a one-stop destination from a brand they know and trust. Kids of all ages can get interesting tidbits about animals, see and share photos of nature, learn about different countries and try science experiments.

From the publishers of TIME magazine, has tons of stuff just for the younger crowd. The sites is filled with stories, photos and videos with sections devoted to business, the; environment, science, health, history and current events.

Stories are also divided by grade from K to 6, so you can choose the appropriate level. Time for Kids may be more suitable for older kids as it isn’t as interactive as some of the others.

Once THE monthly magazine every kid waited for in his or her mailbox, Highlights is now digital only and branded . But you’ll still find games, craft projects, things to explore and other activities, just like in the former magazine. There’s even a joke section and kids can send in their own jokes and riddles.

The features riddles, puzzles, a question of the day, a timeline of interesting history facts, sky events and weather conditions to track at home with your children.
