You don’t have to shell out big bucks to see top-notch theater productions. High schools and colleges across the Denver metro area stage plays and musicals, showcasing some of the best local talent to be found. Far from bare bones, you’ll find fully-realized scenery, costumes, lighting, choreography and often live orchestras. The best part? Ticket prices ($5 to $12) are a fraction of what you’d pay for a “professional” show.

Students are the stars in musical productions such as “The Music Man.” / Source: Depositphotos

Don’t expect to be sitting on folding chairs in some gym. Many high schools house state-of-the-art theaters, perfect for immersing audiences in the experience.

High school theater is also one of the best ways to introduce children to the arts. Kids watching other kids perform not only instills a love of the arts, but helps many children envision themselves on stage.

Most high schools stage shows in the fall and spring (“spring” being a relative term, as the seasons can be mid-January through early-April). Runs are usually short, from a weekend to a week at most.

To buy tickets, it’s easiest to go to the school’s theater program website for full details. Some sell tickets online, others at the door. You may even need to call the school if you can’t find ticketing info online.

Here’s a show calendar of high schools and any upcoming productions. We’ll keep updating as shows are announced.

Know of any we’ve missed? Email Laura@HighOnTheCheap.com with the school name, theater program website and any other details.

Going to the movies during the week can be a much more enjoyable experience than on the weekends, especially because there are fewer people in attendance. That means you can usually get better seats and won’t have to wait in line to get your popcorn and snacks. However, most importantly, you can save money on tickets at most theater chains on Tuesdays, including AMC Theatres.

Image: AMC Theatres

However, AMC Theatres offers an added blockbuster bonus to the weekly deal — Wednesdays are included, too!

Every Tuesday and Wednesday, the popular movie theater chain offers 50% off tickets at participating locations. (The all-day discount applies to 50% off the adult evening base ticket price.)

Surcharges apply for premium formats, including Dolby Cinema, IMAX, PRIME, RealD 3D and D-Box.

Special events are not eligible for the discount, including fan events, private screenings, movie marathons, double features, Fathom Events, Metropolitan Opera, sporting events, select showtimes of certain foreign language films, and other events that are priced above standard ticket price.

Note: Advance purchases made on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for any other day of the week are not eligible for the discount.

The discount is only available for AMC Stubs members. .

Even better, AMC Theatres also offers AMC Stubs members 50% off a Small Combo every Tuesday and Wednesday. The combo includes a small popcorn and small fountain drink or ICEE. (The items must be purchased together as a combo to receive the discount.)

It’s not often you can buy a ticket, munch on popcorn and sip on a soda at half-price, so the savings are definitely worthy of the red carpet.
